Getting Started as a UP Exporter

IEC FirstThen Udyam + GSTLast reviewed: Sep 2026

The Basics Before You Claim Anything

  1. Get an Import Export Code (IEC) from DGFT โ€” this is the entry ticket for any export activity.
  2. Have your Udyam registration and GST registration in place.
  3. Register on relevant export-council/scheme portals as needed for your product category.
  4. Once you have export documentation (shipping bills, BRC) from your first shipment, you become eligible to start claiming incentives like MDA, freight support, and RoDTEP.

New exporters should also look at first-time exporter support for guided onboarding.

Please verify: IEC and related registrations are managed by DGFT/central portals โ€” confirm the current process at dgft.gov.in.
Do I need an IEC even for a small export order?

Yes โ€” an IEC is required for any commercial export shipment, regardless of order size.
